The Complete Guide to Belize Maya Ruins
Belize was once the heartland of the ancient Maya. More than a million Maya lived across what is now Belize between 300 BCE and 900 CE, and the country still holds hundreds of documented ruin sites. Six of them are open to the public and easy to visit on a day tour, making Belize the most convenient country in the region for anyone who wants to walk through real Maya cities without an expedition-style trip.
Xunantunich β the Stone Maiden
Xunantunich sits above the Mopan River in western Belize and is famous for El Castillo, a 130 foot pyramid you can climb for a view across three countries. The site is a 25 minute drive from San Ignacio and is reached by a small hand-cranked ferry across the river, which itself is part of the fun.
Altun Ha β the Jade Head site
Altun Ha is the ruin most travelers based in Belize City choose. It is closer, easier to walk, and its Temple of the Masonry Altars appears on the Belikin beer bottle you will see everywhere. Archaeologists found the largest carved jade object in the Maya world here, the Jade Head of Kinich Ahau.
Lamanai β the Submerged Crocodile
Lamanai is reached by a 90 minute river boat ride from Orange Walk. The journey passes crocodiles, iguanas and dozens of bird species, and the site itself was continuously occupied for more than 3,000 years. It is one of the most peaceful and beautiful ruins in Belize.
Tikal β the greatest Maya city
Tikal sits over the border in northern Guatemala and is the largest Maya archaeological site in the world. Temple IV rises above the canopy and made a cameo in Star Wars: A New Hope. From Belize the day trip is long but very achievable when handled by an experienced operator.
Caracol β Belize's biggest ruin
Caracol is the largest Maya site in Belize and sits deep in the Chiquibul Forest. The tallest structure at Caracol, Caana or Sky Palace, is still the tallest man-made structure in the entire country. The drive is long and rough, which is why smaller group tours matter here.
Cahal Pech β the palace above San Ignacio
Cahal Pech is a compact palace complex right on the edge of San Ignacio town. It was home to a Maya elite family and is one of the earliest continuously occupied sites in the region. It is an excellent late afternoon add-on to any San Ignacio day.
Combining Maya ruins with cave tubing or zipline
One of the best things about Belize is the ability to combine culture with adventure in a single day. Cave tubing pairs beautifully with Altun Ha or Xunantunich, and many guests fold zipline into the same day. The tours page above filters combination options so you can find them in one click.
History of the ancient Maya in Belize
The Maya civilization did not collapse. It transformed. Today about 15 percent of Belizeans identify as Maya, and villages just outside of every ruin site are the living descendants of the people who built these cities. Many of our guides are themselves Maya and share that lineage on tour.
Choosing your first Maya ruin
If you have only one day, go to Altun Ha from Belize City or Xunantunich from San Ignacio. Both give you a real, walkable Maya city in a single relaxed day. If you have two days, add Lamanai. If you have three, add Tikal or Caracol. Our booking team is happy to sequence a multi day itinerary over WhatsApp.
Booking your Belize Maya ruin tour
Every tour on this page is a real departure operated by our team, not resold. Booking directly means you get local support before, during and after your trip, a printable e-ticket, and a small group experience with a licensed Maya site guide.
