    What This Day Actually Feels Like

    Most guests who visit Belize are unaware they can visit one of the largest and most Majestic and important Maya centers in Meso-America, TIKAL! This full day adventure is available tour our guests from Belize City. Sorry San Pedro and Caye Caulker unless you plan to spend a night in Belize city you wont be able to do this tour, and any tour operator who says otherwise is being untruthful to you!

    Your Tikal tour from Belize city starts as your guide picks up at your AirBnB or Hotel in and around Belize City at 5am. Yes you read that right! Our early morning departure takes us on an 80 Mile drive along the George Price highway, past the capital city of Belmopan along the rolling foothills of the Maya Mountains west to the border town of Benque Viejo Del Carmen. In route we stop at Westar Service station near Valley of Peace village should you want to utilize the bathrooms, get coffee and a quick snack. This break is only 10 to 15 minutes as we are aiming for a 7:00 to 7:15 am arrival at the border.

    Our aim for an early arrival is because many resorts, hotels, and tour operators from the Cayo District are sending their guests to Tikal and every foreign guest departing Belize must pay departure tax which is currently at US20.00 ( We stress currently as the government has been in discussions to increase departure tax) Your departure tax is payable in cash or credit card and is NOT included in the cost of your tour.

    Here our Belize tour guide will walk you through the process and get you checked out of Belize. After stamping your passport at immigration he will walk you out the building and introduce you to your Guatemalan Guide who will walk you through the arrival process in Guatemala and get you cleared in. He will also get you seated in your Guatemalan transportation. ( Belize Tour guides cannot guide in Guatemala and our Belize Tour Operator Vehicles are not allowed to work in Guatemala) Your Belize tour guide will wait for you at the border to return you to your hotel. (Don't Panic you will notice every single tour guide and operator does it the same) Every so often the Belize Tour guide accompanies on the entire trip.

    After departing the Guatemala border your Tikal tour from Belize continues with a short 1.5 hour Journey to the entrance to the Tikal National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your Guide will get your entrance paid. Its then a short drive through the reserve from the main gates to the parking lot. (about 20 minutes) On arrival at the parking lot you will be allowed to use the bathrooms your guide will give you bottled water and its off to tour the amazing city of TIKAL. The time around 10:30am yes you have already been up 5.5 hours. Your total tour time on site is around 3 to 4 hours. Visiting the Great Plaza, Central and North Acropolises, Temple IV and many others.

    After your tour we reboard your van and head to the restaurant to have lunch. At the restaurant we take about an hour and then its about another 1.5 hours return to the border. Most days you will be returned to us by 4pm but we have had instances where the guests and guides got so emersed in the tour we did not get our guests back until 5PM. Remember I said its NOT available to guests from Caye Caulker or San Pedro unless you were spending a night in Belize City. This is the reason why. If we get you back by 4pm it's a 2 hour drive from the border Back to Belize City for a 6PM arrival, if we get you back by 5PM the same 2 hour drive applies with a 7PM arrival in Belize City. This sets your total tour time for our Tikal tour from Belize City at 12 to 14 hours. There are NO water taxis or flights to the island at that hour. Also note the first water taxi and first flight from San Pedro arrives at 7:30am this will put us at the border at 9:30am. Outside of a fully private option it is just not possible due to the logistics. Guest choose Belize Fun Tours 9 to 1 over other operators.     We've been running this same Belize City to Tikal route since 2000. It's a family company. The drivers and guides you'll meet aren't subcontractors, they work with us year round and most of them have made this trip hundreds of times. That's why the border feels smooth, and why the timing usually just works.

    Our guides grew up around Maya history. They know which carvings most people walk past, where the coatis usually show up, and which spot on Temple IV gives you the best photo without the railing in the way. They'll also tell you when to slow down and stop talking, which is the part that surprises most people.

    We're locally based and licensed by the Belize Tourism Board, but more importantly we're the people who'll actually answer your WhatsApp at 9pm the night before the tour if you forgot to ask something.

    What Surprises Most Visitors

    How loud the jungle is. Howler monkeys are the first thing most people comment on. They sound bigger than they are. You hear them well before you see anything.

    How big Tikal actually is. Photos make it look like a few pyramids in a clearing. It's a city. You can wander for hours and still not see all of it. We cover the main highlights at a pace that lets you actually absorb the place.

    The border isn't a big deal. A lot of guests build it up in their head. By the time we're done explaining the morning, most people realize the hardest part of the day was the 5am alarm.

    The wildlife is unpredictable. Some days it's monkeys, toucans, coatis, the works. Some days it's quiet and you get more time with the temples. Both are good days, just different.

    It's hot and humid. Especially after about 11am. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat. Closed-toe shoes are way better than sandals on the limestone steps.

    You'll be tired. It's about a 13 hour day door to door. Most people fall asleep on the drive home and order room service for dinner. Worth it.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Our Tikal Tour from Belize City

    Do we need passports?
    Yes, the real booklet. Tikal is in Guatemala so every guest needs a physical passport valid at least 6 months past your travel date. Photos and copies don't work at the border.
    Why so early? Is 5am really necessary?
    Yeah, sorry. We leave early so we hit the border as it opens and get you inside the park before the heat and the big coach groups. It's the main reason guests say the day felt calm instead of rushed. Coffee shows up in the van.
    How hard is the border crossing?
    Honestly, easier than a busy airport. You hand your passport to your guide, stay with the group, and we do the paperwork on both sides. The only thing you pay out of pocket is the Belize departure tax (US$20 per person, cash). Usually done in under 30 minutes.
    Is the drive exhausting?
    It's long. Roughly 2 hours to the border, then another 1.5 to 2 hours to the park. Most people doze on and off. The van is air conditioned and your guide chats with whoever's awake.
    Can kids handle the trip?
    Older kids usually do great, especially ones who like adventure stuff. Younger ones tend to find the drive long. It's about a 13 hour day in total and it's warm and humid. We'd skip the toddler stage for this one.
    Are there bathrooms along the way?
    Yes. Clean restrooms at the border, at the park entrance, and at the lunch spot. Water is in the van throughout the day.
    Is lunch included?
    Yes. A hot Guatemalan lunch at a small family restaurant near the park is included, along with purified water throughout the day. Vegetarian, vegan, and allergy needs can be arranged with advance notice.
    Is the climb difficult?
    Temple IV has steep wooden staircases. Completely optional. Most healthy adults make it up fine taking it slow. You can absolutely skip it and still have a great day at the ruins.
    How hot does it get?
    It's a rainforest, so humid. Mornings are pleasant. By midday you'll want shade, sunscreen, a hat, and water. We try to be done with the big climbs before the heat really kicks in.
    Will we see wildlife?
    Almost always. Howler monkeys you'll hear for sure, they're hard to miss. Spider monkeys, coatis (like little raccoons), and toucans show up often. No promises, it's wildlife, but most groups go home with a few good sightings.
    What should we bring?
    Passport, closed-toe shoes with grip, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, refillable water bottle, camera, and some cash for the US$20 departure tax and tips. A light layer is nice for the early van ride.
    Is hotel pickup included?
    Yes, from hotels and Airbnbs inside Belize City at 5:00 AM. Because of the border timing we can't pick up from the Water Taxi Terminals, Municipal Airstrip, Belama, or Ladyville for this one.
    Can cruise passengers or island guests do this?
    Unfortunately no. The first water taxi from the islands lands at 7:45 AM and cruise disembarkation is even later. By then we're already across the border. Island guests would need to overnight in Belize City the night before.
    What is your cancellation policy?
    Free cancellation up to 7 days before. Inside that window deposits become non refundable because we've already paid for park fees, transport and guide bookings.
    What do I pay today vs on the day?
    A 30% deposit holds your spot. The rest is cash on tour morning. Minimum 2 guests, so the smallest booking today is US$160 (US$80 per person × 2). Departure tax (US$20 per person) is paid at the border.

    Long day, totally worth it

    5am pickup felt brutal but honestly we passed out in the van and woke up at the border. Guide took our passports and we barely had to do anything. Tikal is way bigger than I pictured. Climbed Temple IV and just sat there for a while.

    The howler monkeys though

    Almost cancelled because of the early start. So glad we didn't. The howler monkeys sound like dinosaurs, I'm not even kidding. Border was easier than I expected. Bring bug spray.
