Why Book Our Tikal Tour from Belize City

Belize Fun Tours has over 20 years of direct experience operating the Tikal Tour from Belize City. Founded in 2000 as a locally owned family company, Belize Fun Tours specializes in same day cross border Tikal tours departing from Belize City and has built an unmatched depth of knowledge on this specific route over two continuous decades of service.

All tours are conducted under professional licensing through the Belize Tourism Board with fully insured operations. Every Tikal Tour from Belize is led by licensed bilingual guides with deep knowledge of Maya history, archaeology, and the natural environment of Tikal National Park. Guide expertise is developed through years of repeated visits to the site and ongoing professional training.

Belize Fun Tours handles all logistics in house with no third party intermediaries. This includes hotel pickup in Belize City, air conditioned transportation, Guatemala border processing and documentation, Tikal National Park entrance fees, and a traditional Guatemalan lunch. The entire experience from departure to return is managed directly by the Belize Fun Tours local team.

Guest satisfaction has remained consistently high over two decades of operation. Small group touring allows for personal attention from guides and a more comfortable experience at Tikal. The operational reliability that comes from running the same Belize City to Tikal route for over 20 years means established relationships at border crossings, proven timing, and a refined itinerary built on thousands of successful departures.

What to Expect on Your Tikal Day from Belize City

The 5:00 AM pickup, and why we start so early. Pickup is at 5:00 AM sharp from your Belize City hotel or Airbnb. The early start exists for one reason: it lets us reach the Guatemala border as it opens, complete all entry formalities without waiting in line, and put you inside Tikal National Park before the heat of midday. By starting at 5:00 AM, you finish a full Tikal experience and return to Belize City the same evening rather than overnighting in Guatemala.

The border crossing, handled for you. When we arrive at the western border, your guide collects passports, processes Belize exit paperwork, walks the group across the line, and handles Guatemala entry. The only out of pocket payment at the border is the Belize Government departure tax of US$20 per person. You stay with the group, follow your guide, and the entire crossing is typically complete in under 30 minutes.

How the day actually feels. After the border, you continue toward Tikal National Park through the Petén jungle. By around 9:00 AM you are walking the Great Plaza between Temple I and Temple II with your guide explaining over a thousand years of Maya history. You climb Temple IV for canopy level views, visit the Lost World Complex and the Central and North Acropolises, and spot howler monkeys, toucans, and coatis along the trails. Hot lunch is served around 1:00 PM. We begin the return drive in the early afternoon and arrive back in Belize City between 6:00 and 7:00 PM depending on border traffic.

Why book this from Belize, not from Guatemala. Booking the Tikal tour through a licensed Belize operator means you keep one point of contact, one company accountable, and one team that knows both sides of the border. Local Guatemalan operators cannot pick you up in Belize City, do not handle the Belize exit process, and often add transfer hand offs that complicate the day. Belize Fun Tours runs the entire experience end to end with our own vehicle, our own driver, and our own bilingual guide.

Transportation. You travel in an air conditioned vehicle from your Belize City pickup all the way to Tikal and back. The same vehicle and driver remain with the group the entire day, so there is no shuttle swap, no waiting for connections, and no language barrier mid trip.

Who this tour is best for. History lovers, active travelers, and anyone who wants a substantive cultural day rather than a beach day. Expect a 13 hour commitment from pickup to drop off, comfortable walking on uneven jungle paths, optional steep temple climbs, and warm humid conditions. Older school age children typically do well; this is not a stroller or toddler friendly itinerary.

Realistic expectations. A minimum of 2 guests is required to operate the tour. Pickup is from Belize City hotels and Airbnbs only, not from the Water Taxi Terminals, Municipal Airstrip, Belama, or Ladyville. Bring your valid passport and be ready to leave the hotel lobby at 5:00 AM. Return time depends on border traffic and is typically 6:00 to 7:00 PM.

All border processing and documentation is handled by our team.
Where does this Tikal tour depart from?
The Tikal Tour from Belize City departs from Belize City at 5:00 AM. The early departure is necessary to allow a full day at Tikal National Park with same day return to Belize City. A separate Tikal tour is also available from San Ignacio.
Can I take a Tikal Tour from Belize?
Yes, the Tikal Tour from Belize is available from both Belize City and San Ignacio. This page covers the Belize City departure, which leaves at 5:00 AM for a same day round trip to Tikal National Park in Guatemala. The tour includes border assistance, a bilingual guide, transportation, entrance fees, and lunch.
What time does the tour start?
Pickup is at 5:00 AM from Belize City hotels and Airbnbs. This early timing ensures guests arrive at Tikal National Park before peak crowds and have a full day to explore the archaeological site before returning to Belize City the same evening.
Is this tour available from San Pedro or Caye Caulker?
This tour is not available from San Pedro or Caye Caulker. The first water taxi arrives in Belize City at 7:45 AM and the first flight from San Pedro lands at 7:15 AM, but by that time our team is already at the border processing the crossing into Guatemala. Guests staying on the islands would need to travel to Belize City the evening before the 5:00 AM departure.
Do I need my passport for the Tikal tour?
Yes. A valid passport is required for every guest because the tour crosses the Guatemala border. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the travel date. Bring the physical passport with you on tour day, not a copy.
    Is lunch included?
Yes. A hot traditional Guatemalan lunch with a beverage is included in the tour price and served at a quality local restaurant after exploring Tikal National Park.
How long is the drive from Belize City to Tikal?
The drive from Belize City to the Guatemala border takes roughly 2 hours. After border processing, it is approximately another 1.5 to 2 hours to Tikal National Park, putting total one way travel at around 4 hours including the border stop. We depart at 5:00 AM specifically to keep the schedule comfortable and arrive at Tikal before the heat and crowds.
    Is the border crossing difficult?
No. Our team handles the entire Guatemala border process for you. You stay with the group, present your passport, and we manage all paperwork, fees, and logistics on both the Belize and Guatemala sides. Guests routinely tell us the crossing is smoother than they expected.
    Is Tikal safe for tourists?
Yes. Tikal National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with on site park rangers, established walking paths, and a steady flow of international visitors. You are accompanied at all times by your licensed bilingual guide, and our drivers stay with the vehicle throughout the day.
What should I bring on the tour?
Bring your valid passport, comfortable walking or hiking shoes with good grip, a camera with extra batteries, sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, insect repellent, and some cash or a card for the Belize departure tax (US$20 per person, paid at the border) and any souvenirs.
    Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup is included from hotels and Airbnbs within Belize City limits at 5:00 AM. We do not pick up from the Water Taxi Terminals, Municipal Airstrip, Belama, or Ladyville for this departure due to the border crossing schedule.
Can cruise passengers book this tour?
No. The 5:00 AM Belize City departure happens before any cruise ship begins disembarkation, so cruise passengers cannot make the timing for this same day Tikal tour.
    What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation is available up to 7 days before your tour date. Cancellations made inside the 7 day window are non refundable because Tikal National Park entrance fees, transportation, and guide commitments are paid in advance.
How much do I pay today versus on the tour day?
A 30% deposit is paid today to lock in your reservation, and the remaining balance is paid in cash on the morning of the tour. Because a minimum of 2 guests is required to operate the tour, the smallest reservation total today is US$160 (US$80 per person for 2 guests). The Belize departure tax of US$20 per person is paid separately at the border.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children who are comfortable with an early start, long travel days, and moderate walking on uneven jungle paths typically enjoy the Tikal tour. The day involves roughly 13 hours of total time, optional steep temple climbs, and warm jungle conditions, so it is best suited to school age children and older.
How physically demanding is the tour?
The tour is moderate. Expect roughly 2 to 3 miles of walking on uneven jungle paths, steep wooden staircases on Temple IV if you choose to climb, and warm humid conditions. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, but most healthy adults complete the tour comfortably at a relaxed guided pace.

    Absolutely unforgettable experience

We were picked up right on time from the Ramada Belize City Princess and the entire day was seamless from start to finish. The drive through the Belizean countryside was beautiful and our guide kept us entertained with stories about Maya culture. Crossing into Guatemala was easier than I expected because our guide handled all the paperwork. Once we arrived at Tikal, I was speechless. The temples rising above the jungle canopy are something you have to see in person to believe. Climbing Temple IV and looking out over the treetops was the highlight of the whole trip. We also spotted toucans and a family of coatimundis near the Great Plaza. Lunch was delicious and included in the price.

Worth every minute of the early morning

My husband and I almost talked ourselves out of this tour because of the early start, but we are so thankful we went. The van was comfortable and our driver was careful on the roads. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the Maya civilization and made the ruins come alive with his stories. Tikal is massive and we spent over four hours exploring different temple complexes. The Great Plaza took my breath away. We heard howler monkeys echoing through the jungle the entire time which made it feel so wild and untouched. The border crossing into Guatemala was quick and well organized. This was hands down the best excursion of our vacation.

A must do from Belize City

They picked us up from the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza and had us back by evening. The pickup was smooth and perfectly on schedule. Tikal is one of those places that photos cannot do justice. Standing at the base of Temple I and looking up at the massive stone structure gave me chills. Our guide explained how the Maya built these incredible monuments without metal tools or wheels which just blows your mind. We climbed Temple IV and the panoramic view of the jungle stretching to the horizon was breathtaking. Spotted spider monkeys swinging through the trees right above us. The included lunch at a local restaurant was tasty and filling.

    Tikal blew my mind

I have traveled to archaeological sites all over the world and Tikal stands out as one of the most impressive. The fact that these enormous pyramids are surrounded by dense tropical jungle makes the experience feel like something out of an adventure movie. Our guide was passionate and articulate, explaining the political history of the Maya kings who ruled from Tikal. We saw coatimundis wandering casually across the plazas and heard toucans calling from the canopy. The climb to the top of Temple IV was steep but the reward at the summit was a view I will never forget. Everything about this tour was professionally run.

Best day trip in Central America

Our family of four did this tour and it was the highlight of our entire Belize vacation. Pickup from the Fort George Hotel and Spa was right on time and the van was clean and air conditioned. The drive gave us a chance to see the Belizean and Guatemalan countryside which was gorgeous. Our guide made the border crossing completely stress free by handling all the documents. At Tikal we were amazed by the sheer scale of the ruins. The kids loved climbing the temples and spotting wildlife. We saw a group of spider monkeys playing in the trees near one of the smaller plazas. Lunch was included and everyone enjoyed it.

    Incredible history and nature combined

What makes Tikal special is the combination of ancient history and pristine jungle. You can hear the wildlife before you even see it. Howler monkeys were roaring from the treetops as we walked between temple complexes. Our guide pointed out birds I never would have noticed on my own including a beautiful toucan perched high in a ceiba tree. The Maya history lesson was fascinating and our guide connected the dots between the different structures in a way that made the whole city come to life. Climbing to the top of Temple IV and seeing other pyramids poking through the green canopy was pure magic. This tour is worth every penny.

    Seamless pickup and amazing ruins

We stayed at the Golden Bay Belize Hotel and the pickup was perfectly organized. The driver arrived a few minutes early and we were on our way before sunrise. The long drive flew by because our guide shared fascinating stories about Belize and Guatemala along the way. Crossing the border was simple and took only about twenty minutes. When we finally arrived at Tikal the scale of the ruins was staggering. The Great Plaza is enormous and the temples are so tall they disappear into the treetops. We climbed three different structures and each one offered a unique perspective of the ancient city. Saw monkeys and colorful birds throughout the park.

    Once in a lifetime adventure

This was my dream trip and it exceeded every expectation. Tikal is so much bigger than I imagined. You could spend days exploring and still not see everything. Our guide was exceptional and clearly loved sharing the history of this ancient Maya city. He explained the significance of every major structure and how the different plazas connected to the political and religious life of the Maya. I was thrilled when we spotted a troop of howler monkeys right near Temple II. The sounds of the jungle combined with these towering stone pyramids created an atmosphere that felt almost sacred. I would recommend this tour to absolutely anyone visiting Belize.

    Do not skip this tour

If you are staying in Belize City and wondering whether the drive to Tikal is worth it, let me save you the debate. It is absolutely worth it. We were picked up from The Great House Inn and the whole process was easy and well organized. The transportation was comfortable and our guide was entertaining during the drive. At Tikal the temples are jaw dropping. Temple I and Temple II facing each other across the Great Plaza is one of the most dramatic sights I have ever seen. We climbed Temple IV and the view from the top looking over endless jungle was surreal. Also saw coatimundis roaming around which the kids thought was hilarious.

The jungle setting makes it magical

I have been to Chichen Itza and Palenque but Tikal has something neither of those places offer. The jungle completely surrounds you and the wildlife is everywhere. We heard howler monkeys before we even entered the park and throughout the day we spotted toucans, parrots, and a family of coatimundis crossing the trail. Our guide was brilliant and explained the rise and fall of Tikal as a Maya superpower. The temples are enormous and climbing them gives you a real sense of how powerful this civilization was. The included lunch was at a nice restaurant near the park entrance. Everything about the day was well planned and executed.

Professional tour from start to finish

We stayed at the Black Orchid Resort and the pickup was smooth and right on schedule. The driver was friendly and the vehicle was comfortable for the long drive. Our guide was a wealth of knowledge about both Belizean and Guatemalan history and culture. The border crossing was handled entirely by our guide so we just had to show our passports and walk through. Tikal itself is beyond impressive. Walking through the jungle and suddenly seeing a massive pyramid appear through the trees is an experience I will carry with me forever. We spent about five hours at the site and climbed every temple that was open. Outstanding day.

    History came alive at Tikal

As a history teacher I was thrilled to finally visit Tikal and it did not disappoint. Our guide was articulate and deeply knowledgeable about Maya political systems, astronomy, and daily life. He pointed out details in the carvings and architecture that I would have completely missed on my own. The Great Plaza is awe inspiring and standing there imagining it filled with thousands of Maya citizens was a powerful moment. Temple IV is the tallest structure and the climb is steep but the panoramic view from the summit is extraordinary. The whole site is surrounded by lush jungle full of birds and monkeys. This tour was worth every single minute.

    Tikal exceeded all expectations

My wife and I booked this tour on our last full day in Belize and it turned out to be the best decision of our trip. We were picked up from the Harbour View Boutique Hotel and the entire day ran like clockwork. The drive through the countryside was scenic and our guide shared interesting facts about the regions we passed through. At Tikal the ruins are simply magnificent. The pyramids tower above the jungle and the atmosphere is unlike anything else. We climbed Temple IV just before midday and had the platform mostly to ourselves. Spider monkeys were swinging through the canopy below us. The included lunch was generous and flavorful.

An adventure I will always remember

Tikal has been on my bucket list for years and this tour made it happen so easily. Pickup from the Bamboleo Inn was prompt and hassle free. The comfortable van made the drive enjoyable and our guide was funny and informative the whole way. The Guatemala border crossing took about fifteen minutes and our guide managed everything. Walking into Tikal for the first time and seeing Temple I rising above the trees literally stopped me in my tracks. The detail in the stonework is remarkable considering how old these structures are. We saw toucans, heard howler monkeys, and watched coatimundis sniffing around the walkways. Lunch was tasty and well timed.

    A world class archaeological site

We were staying at the Seaside Chateau and the morning pickup was easy and well coordinated. The drive to the border was about two hours and our guide used that time to teach us about the history of Belize and the Maya lowlands. Crossing into Guatemala was quick because our guide had all the paperwork ready. Tikal is absolutely world class. The sheer number of structures spread across the jungle is mind boggling. We explored for nearly five hours and still felt like we only scratched the surface. Temple IV is the crown jewel with views that stretch to the horizon over unbroken rainforest canopy. Saw spider monkeys and several species of colorful birds.
