About this tour

Community Baboon Sanctuary and Altun Ha Maya Ruins Tour

Your Altun Ha and Community Baboon Sanctuary tour starts An hour northward out of Belize City, your disembarkation point, along quaint country roads, secondary rainforest, Creole villages and isolated farms, rises the majestic beauty of the Maya ceremonial center called Altun Ha (rock stone pond).

Royal priests ruled Altun Ha for many centuries, and traded with other Mayan centers in Meso America. Some 55 years ago, Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, along with his excavation team, discovered a tomb of a priest in the Temple of the Masonry Altars, and in it, a nine and three quarter pound jade carving of the Sun God, Kinich Ahau – a world famous event! Climb prepared stone steps to the stars! Surround yourself with the aura of these ancient stargazers living in the rain-forests of Belize. After a delicious Belizean lunch, travel to the Baboon Sanctuary for the second part of your Altun Ha and Baboon Sanctuary Tour.

The Baboon Sanctuary tour is a true nature-lover’s excursion, as a rainbow of butterflies, birds, and reptiles can be seen while traversing through high grass and thick undergrowth. The most esteemed sighting is undoubtedly that of a family of black howler monkeys casually lounging in an oasis of fruit trees.

The animals appear to welcome the spectators as they swing avidly from branch to branch and chatter boisterously among themselves. The booming vocal roar of an adult male serves to alert the pack of the arrival of the tiresome visitors. Photo opportunities are in abundance but undeniably the most priceless keepsake is that everlasting mental portrait and the feeling of absolute freedom and relaxation that is uniquely experienced amidst Belize’s unspoiled wilderness!

Guests coming from San Pedro Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker are responsible for water taxi or local flight cost to Belize City.

This tour is also available for cruise ship guests docking in Belize City.

Altun Ha and Howler Monkey Reserve Tour

My family of 17 recently took our 1st cruise and decided to book all of our excursions separate from the tours offered through Carnival. We decided to book this tour with Belize Tours Marketplace. Our guide was waiting just outside the terminal when we arrived. Since we had such a large group we were given a "private" tour. I have to say this was my favorite day of our entire vacation! Our guides were Adrian (yo Adrian!) and Melissa. Our driver was Lincoln. Adrian and Melissa were AMAZING! Adrian was very knowledgeable and informative telling us about the country and culture of Belize. Both of our guides were very friendly and very entertaining throughout the tour. We went to the Howler Monkey Reserve first. I believe it was on the way to the reserve Adrian stopped to buy our group some fresh mangos. Delicious! Our guide at the reserve was Royce. Royce told us all about the history of the reserve and the ecosystem. Then he led us into the jungle where a family of howler monkeys lives. Each member of my family was able to feed a baby howler monkey. It was one of the most incredible experiences! After we left the reserve we picked up lunch from a local restaurant on the way to the ruins. The lunch was delicious local fare of rice and beans and chicken. Melissa took over the tour at Altun Ha where she explained the history of the ruins. She was very knowledgeable and informative! We were able to climb the largest temple which was another amazing experience! We arrived back at the cruise terminal with about an hour to spare. I cannot recommend this tour enough or these two guides. We had an unbelievable time in Belize and are looking forward to going back. We would DEFINITELY book with Belize Tours Marketplace again.

Amazing Day in Belize thanks to "Yooooo Adrian"

We came to Belize on a cruise in Sept 2018 and it was by far my favorite stop of the trip (4 stops), and one of my favorite excursions EVER, and I've traveled outside the States quite a bit. Our guide Adrian was so knowledgeable about the history of Belize, he was so friendly and patient, he was also very funny! We fed wild Howler Monekys, ate lunch at "the Road House Resturant", then finished the day at Altun Ha. You can actually WALK on Altun Ha, it was such an unforgettable experience. I 100% will travel to Belize again and I will ONLY use this tour company and I will recommend to anyone :) THANK YOU ADRIAN!!
